My story: From K9 handler to your trusted trainer

IronK9 Training was founded by Garrett Taylor Sr., a former K9 Handler and current K9 Instructor with years of experience in corrections-based working dog programs. After transitioning from handler to instructor in 2024, I have helped train and certify dozens of correctional K9 teams in both patrol and detection work.

That experience shaped my focus on control, clarity, and real-world performance. I saw firsthand how structured training transforms not only working dogs, but the relationship between dogs and handlers in every environment.

The decision to create IronK9 Training came from a simple belief: if structure and consistency can produce reliable working dogs in high-pressure environments, it can do the same for any dog and owner.

My own dog, Sirius, became a dependable working partner inside a correctional facility through consistent training, clear communication, and the right structure. That experience is the foundation behind the way I train today and the results I expect for every client.

Our unique approach: Building control that lasts

Many dog trainers offer obedience in controlled settings, but IronK9 Training is built around a different standard: clear communication, consistency, and dependable behavior under real-world conditions. The focus is not on temporary compliance, but on reliable obedience that holds up beyond the training environment.

My goal is to develop dogs that owners can confidently handle in everyday situations, not just during training sessions. I have personally worked in a correctional K9 environment, where I built and handled a dog known for his discipline, control, and protective capability. That experience shaped my approach to training and the standards I apply to every client I work with.

My commitment comes from the responsibility I had as a handler for Sirius, and I bring that same level of focus, accountability, and structure to every dog and owner I train.

Transformations make us proud

True success in dog training isn’t about how a dog looks, it’s about reliable behavior under real-world conditions. That means clean obedience on and off leash, clear responses to commands, and steady control in everyday environments.

There is real value in watching a dog and owner reach that point where communication becomes clear and the work begins to click. A simple sit, down, stay, or heel becomes meaningful when it’s the result of structure, timing, and consistent leadership.

IronK9 Training is not focused on quick fixes or surface-level obedience. The goal is long-term reliability built through clarity, accountability, and a training process that produces lasting results for both dog and owner.

What Clients Are Saying…

“I got to serve with Garrett for over two years with the Delaware Department of Correction. When getting to know him, it was clear that he took his job title as a K9 handler seriously with his partner Sirius. At work, he always carried himself professionally while on duty. When informing Garrett of the purchase of my 3 month Belgian Malinois (Max), he immediately offered to help train him as he expressed how much he enjoys doing so. During the training, it was immediately noticeable that Garrett has a true passion and joy for training dogs and it is not just something he does for money. We have now had a few training sessions that has benefited Max greatly in his progression. Garrett is a great trainer but also a good person who truly wants to see the best for not just my dog, but also myself. His advice while training and also whenever I have reached out separately has truly benefited Max and I greatly. As time goes on, I look forward to seeing Max’s progression which all started with Garett’s initial training and insight. I highly recommend Garrett as someone who can provide you the confidence to work with your dog along with seeing your dogs progression while doing so.”

My wife and I have been working with Garrett at IronK9 Training for some time now, and the difference in our dog, Piper, is truly night and day. Garrett's approach to training has been outstanding. Since Piper came from a shelter, she has had unique needs and challenges, and Garrett has been incredibly versatile in tailoring his training methods to fit her specific personality and temperament. He never pushed her too far or too fast, always taking the time to ensure she was comfortable, confident, and successful throughout the process. What we appreciate most is that Garrett hasn’t just trained Piper, he’s trained us as well. He has given us the knowledge, tools, and confidence to continue building on Piper's success at home. Watching Piper grow and learning alongside her has been an incredible experience. We are beyond grateful for everything Garrett has done for us. We cannot recommend IronK9 Training enough!
